Creators of America’s First Computer Science Immersion Schools to Bring Renowned Program to Local Students

Hacienda, CA --  Hacienda La Puente Unified School District is pleased to announce its partnership with Code To The Future, the nation’s leading Computer Science program for magnet and theme-based schools.  At the March 9th, 2017 HLPUSD Board of Education Meeting, the Board approved the agreement between Hacienda La Puente Unified School District and Code To The Future, to provide coding classes for elementary students in a Computer Science Immersion Program, from March 14, 2017 through June 30, 2022.

Code to the Future specializes in coding lessons geared to elementary students and offers an established curriculum, coaches for the classrooms on a rotating basis, and professional development.

District officials selected Workman, Wedgeworth, Bixby, Del Valle, Baldwin, Cedarlane Academy, and Valinda School of Academics to become Computer Science Immersion Schools. Students at these schools will have the opportunity to learn fundamentals of Computer Coding as part of their daily curriculum. Through this 21st century literacy, students will develop critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration skills.

Through the partnership with Code To The Future, teachers will be able engage students through block and text-based coding activities to enhance their education experiences through Computer Science. Students will have another avenue to apply problem solving, team building, and presentation skills as they collaborate and share their thinking process with peers.

In regards to the partnership, Andrew Svehaug, CEO of Code To The Future said, “Hacienda La Puente students will have a great opportunity to learn computer science in a fun and engaging way while also developing the skills they need to be successful in our digital future.” The district will launch its seven Computer Science Immersion Schools this August. These schools will continue to offer the same, outstanding instruction in Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Social Studies, Music, and PE, all of which are foundational content to these campuses. Coding will be an exciting, integrated enhancement to the excellent learning already taking place at these schools.
