Message from Superintendent Parulan-Colfer on Safe Schools-Safe Zones and DACA (September 2017)
Message from Superintendent Parulan-Colfer (9/6/2017):
HLPUSD Community:
Yesterday morning, action was taken on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) by the President of the United States that creates questions and concerns from students, families, and staff members.  I want to ensure that we are reminded of this District's commitment to the families we serve.
Several months ago, a unanimous decision by the Board of Education reiterated what this school district stands for:  Hacienda La Puente maintains its commitment to serving all of the students within our community and providing them with an education in a safe environment.  As supported by the LA County Office of Education, the action on DACA does not impact our responsibility to provide an education.  The legal obligations put forth by both the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Plyer vs. Doe and the California Constitution defines public education as a fundamental right for our students.
Our roles as educators remains consistent: we are here to support our students and their families by providing support and information. HLPUSD continues to be a  Safe Haven for students regardless  of their immigration status.  With the recent actions, staff has worked on more opportunities to provide information to our staff and community:
  • Office Equity and Access will provide after school workshops for teachers interested in learning more about DACA and Immigration Rights.
  • Parent/Family information Nights will be hosted by Equity and Access.
  • Information and protocols for administrators will be reviewed at the District Leadership Team meeting on Monday, September 11, 2017.
  •  A copy of the Board Resolution is highlighted on the website.
  • The Website on Immigration Rights has been updated to include newer resources regarding DACA: http://www.hlpschools.org/immigration
Please feel free to contact us with questions or concerns or suggestions to assist in helping to keep everyone informed.  In trying times, I again reiterate my appreciation to each of you for your dedication and commitment to our students and families.
